As with all of Tarshis' books, this book is full of obscure facts written in a way that is fascinating for kids to read and learn. She also includes a full bibliography, which gave me great suggestions for further reading on each topic.

This is one of the more perfect books I've read on the prickly issue of marital ...

This is one of the more perfect books I've read on the prickly issue of marital intimacy. It's a great companion to Laura Brotherson's "And They Were Not Ashamed." While Brotherson's book tackles the hows of communication and sexual relations, Busby's book answers more of the whats and whys. The authors provide some great background into why we approach sex the way we do and why that doesn't necessarily work.
Personally, this book left me feeling happier and more hopeful for my marriage than any other. The authors have a slightly more researched approach to the topic than other books -- which makes it easy when asking my wonderful wife to consider giving it a read. I'm surprised it hasn't received more reviews. It has left me not only thinking my future will be happier, but it's also made me realize I'm not lost as well. Their perspective of recognizing and working with our divine sexual nature works perfectly against the tawdry advice given by other, more world-bound experts. It's a great read.

This is the best book on this topic I have ever seen.

It is balanced, articulate, thoughtful, insightful, and long overdue. This will give an individual/couple the tools needed to properly navigate the landscape of sexuality in marriage. It certainly frames things in a perspective that even 30 year veterans can learn from. It empowers parents with confidence to teach their children on what can be a delicate and sensitive topic. The emotional and spiritual components are woven together with the physical aspects that are sorely missing in today's literature. It is a must for ecclesiastical leaders. Five stars does not do it justice.

Fantastic book, would have liked clearer examples

Buy this book, you'll find nothing better to get you started, but I do wish there was someone here with me with whom I could dispute. You're given the vocabulary and you're given the rules as they're understood, and you're given instruction to remain flexible, really flexible, but honestly, there's not a single exercise that isn't frustrating. Matching the solutions to the problems often left me wondering how the author managed to get to that solution with the material provided. I do wish there had been clearer examples. Also, I didn't much care for new material being sprung within the exercises ostensively for practicing the fresh martial just provided, on matter how minor, that sends the student scrurring scrounging the indexes and online for something that resembles the apparently new shape that appears within the example and stops the transliteration dead in its tracks.

I have gone through all the exercises and carefully studied each of the solutions, compared them with my own replications of the exercises and my solution, I have hand-copied every single symbol onto index cards, and used those cards, every title, every phrase, and I've copied each exercise into a separate notebook. I've copied the Gardiner's sign list onto cards as well as the vocabulary provided in the book, that's including the indexes, on both cards and, using Photoshop, I've copied another more extensive set onto computer files for cross-referencing and for extra symbol handling, so that's twice. I'm saying that I re-wrote by hand the symbols in the book twice. My index cards and computer files number in the low thousands. Throughout all of the exercises, I have failed to get one single exercise 100% correct, and that has been frustrating. Now finished with the book I feel unqualified to interpret with confidence the text on any given painting, carving, or object because my answers have not once matched precisely the solutions.

But they've come real close.

So I could probably b.s. my way through a museum tour convincingly and along the way display a depth of understanding that is real, pretending a confidence I do not possess, but I'm not like that.

I understand there was no codified standardized uniform spelling that endured through the ages, I get that language evolves, and I understand abbreviation and their habit of odd redundancy and I do appreciate the love of puns and I understand individual artistry will not match exactly typeface, but I just flat do not accept that a scribe, an artist, and a craftsman would go to all the trouble of carving an elaborate bird into stone that is not a part of a phrase, a word, or a phoneme so I'm forced to challenge the solution provided even though I unqualified to do so, nor would they omit a symbol that is required to distinguish it from something similar, nor would they be so silly as to confuse through carelessness a sloppily drawn eye with a mouth or with a handleless basket, all of which have similar but distinct shapes. I mean, come on! An eye is not a mouth, and a sun is not a placenta, a wren is not a sparrow, and a vulture is not an owl, which in turn is not quail chick, just as a seat is not a loaf of bread, all signs that can appear similar depending on who drew them or what damage has come to them, their presence means something just as their absence means something and conflating them means arriving at divergent interpretations. Honestly, in the end I conclude that a large part of all this is pure guesswork, educated guesswork for sure, and advanced extrapolation certainly, but still opinion. Having said all that, and having done all that I've said, I must hasten to add that going through this book has advanced my appreciation for the language immeasurably, and to me that is important. I do recommend this book. You should buy it. It's a bargain at twice the price, and if you would go through it as I have then I'm certain your appreciation will advance considerably for all things Egyptian, and if you would just flip through it an eighth as thoroughly as I have gone through it then you'll still get your money's worth.

I think it's the best book for any one that wants to learn ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs, and lot's of history and culture
along the way.
It's organized perfectly and never gets boring.
The pictures are in high detail so you won't miss anything, and brings real stories from inside the mysteries of ancient Egypt.
The grammar and vocabulary is produced in an easy way of learning for anyone.
this book convinced me that I want to be an Egyptologist.
I loved it!

A good starting point

This book is a good starting point for someone desiring to learn SEM in Lisrel. Theoretical/statistical concepts have been explained in a simple manner and explanation of Lisrel is thorough. Useful as a course book. Not a good book if you already know SEM and are looking for in-depth understanding.

The book has some appeal.

About 20 years ago, I carried out a number of projects involving analysis of SEM models with LISREL7. The syntax of this language does not differ much from that of LISREL8. In this regard, I did not benefit much from the book by B.Byrne. However, I do not regret having bought it.

The style of the book is prolix. Virtually all the topics discussed in the book are included in the LISREL8 and PRELIS2 users' guides by K.Joreskog and D.Sorbom. The presentation of material is much more compact in the manuals than in the book. In my opinion, this more concise presentation is better and a reader can assimilate easier relevant information.

I believe that the approach adopted by the author can appeal to many readers. A positive feature is an extensive list of references related to various disciplines, including: business, education, marketing, medicine and sociology. The SIMPLIS command language is described much more extensively in the book than in the manuals.

I am a doctoral student currently enrolled in an SEM class and I found this book to be invaluable. Our class exclusively used LISREL software and this book provided clear explanations of the syntax and output files. Byrne's writing is clear and understandable, plus the chapters are full of worked examples. I highly recommend this book to anyone learning about SEM or learning to write LISREL syntax.

About the Author

Siu-Lan Tan is Professor of Psychology at Kalamazoo College in Michigan USA. She graduated in Music Education and Piano Pedagogy and taught music for many years in Hong Kong and California before completing a Ph.D. in Psychology at Georgetown University. She is also primary editor of the recent book, The Psychology of Music in Multimedia. Her research focuses on musical unity, music notation, and film music, and her primary instrument is piano.

Peter Pfordresher is Professor of Psychology at SUNY Buffalo in New York USA, and an associate editor of the journal Music Perception. He completed his Ph.D. in Psychology at the Ohio State University. His research interests include the role of auditory feedback in music performance and causes of inaccurate singing. He has experience in musical performance with piano, trumpet, and voice, as well as song writing.

Rom Harré is Emeritus Fellow of Linacre College, Oxford University. Currently he is Distinguished Research Professor of Psychology at Georgetown University and, until recently, Director of the Centre for the Philosophy of the Natural and Social Sciences at the London School of Economics. He has performed in various amateur ensembles on clarinet and saron. He was awarded an APA Lifetime Achievement Award (Division 24) in 2010, and the APA’s Theodore Sarbin Award in 2014

Excellent journalistic summary of the field

Psychology of Music: From Sound to Significance, by Siu-Lan Tan, Peter Pfordresher, and Rom Harré, is an excellent, and very clearly written, up-to-date review of the general standard field of music psychology. In other words, the book is a well-researched, well-documented, balanced, unbiased, and lucid introduction for the layperson on the physiological, neurological, and cultural nature and significance of music as an auditory form. In that way, I unreservedly give this book a full five stars: I'm in love with it as a methodically rational scholar.

But, I'm deeply biased as a human being: I'm no Vulcan. While the book is journalistically admirable in its ultra-conservatively 'rational' refusal to jump to conclusions on the issues and on the empirical evidence, I, personally, believe that the musical sense, and, hence, the acoustic artifacts of that sense, is properly understood to be the proto-linguistic substance of what I call The Primal Logic. So, I personally `demote' Psychology of Music: From Sound to Significance to four stars. For a hint of one of the few things that informs my bias, read the two of David Huron's 1999 UC Berkley Lectures that are at [...] and [...] (respectively, Lecture 3. Methodology:The New Empiricism: Systematic Musicology in a Postmodern Age; and Lecture 2. An Instinct for Music: Is Music an Evolutionary Adaptation?)
