Bounce: Rap Music and Local Identity in New Orleans (American Popular Music), by Matt Miller

Over the course of the twentieth century, African Americans in New Orleans helped define the genres of jazz, rhythm and blues, soul, and funk. In recent decades, younger generations of New Orleanians have created a rich and dynamic local rap scene, which has revolved around a dance-oriented style called “bounce.”

Hip-hop has been the latest conduit for a “New Orleans sound” that lies at the heart of many of the city’s best-known contributions to earlier popular music genres. Bounce, while globally connected and constantly evolving, reflects an enduring cultural continuity that reaches back and builds on the city’s rich musical and cultural traditions.

In this book, the popular music scholar and filmmaker Matt Miller explores the ways in which participants in New Orleans’s hip-hop scene have collectively established, contested, and revised a distinctive style of rap that exists at the intersection of deeply rooted vernacular music traditions and the modern, globalized economy of commercial popular music. Like other forms of grassroots expressive culture in the city, New Orleans rap is a site of intense aesthetic and economic competition that reflects the creativity and resilience of the city’s poor and working-class African Americans.

Review
"Bounce uses the tools of the historian, the musicologist, and the sociologist as it works to create a portrait of rap music in New Orleans that at once places bounce in a legible history of African American cultural life while also paying careful attention to the particularities of New Orleans's unique musical cultures."―Jeffrey Melnick, author of 9/11 Culture and coeditor of American Popular Music: New Approaches to the Twentieth Century

"Miller's research is more than thorough. He convincingly establishes bounce as yet another offshoot of New Orleans's unique musical culture."―PopMatters

"While Bounce: Rap Music and Local Identity in New Orleans is indeed the first book of its kind on the subject, its importance lies not so much in this distinction as it does in the thoughtful perspectives that inform its methodology. Careful not to approach bounce music in either musical or cultural isolation, Miller considers the realities of New Orleans's geographic and socio-spacial history, the city's long tradition of public street performance, the central role of the housing projects, the stark meterialities of racialized poverty and violence, and the effects of Hurricane Katrina, displacement, and the right to return, largely without falling into the trap of romanticization and/or morbid glorification that so many others writing on the subject do. subject do. . . . Miller provides readers with a solid resource that can and will be used by writers, journalists, music critics, culture workers, and enthusiasts alike as a point of departure for further exploration and reflection."―Southern Spaces

"Miller leaves no stone unturned, focusing on every conceivable way bounce has affected New Orleans. . . . Bounce is a comprehensive history and should stand as the go-to document for anyone looking to read up on one of the most important music genres in the country."―Off Beat

"Miller's book is important, if for no other reason than its placement of Sissy Bounce within the realm of contemporary subaltern cultural production."―Journal of African American History

About the Author
Matt Miller completed his PhD at Emory University, where he continues to teach American Studies. He was codirector of the documentary film Ya Heard Me (2008), presenting the history of bounce music and bounce artists. Dating Game, by Danielle Steel

In her 57th bestselling novel, Danielle Steel brilliantly chronicles the roller-coaster ride of dating the second time around—and tells a captivating story of the surprises one woman encounters when she’s thrust into the terrifying, exhilarating world of the Dating Game.

Paris Armstrong never saw it coming. With two grown children and a lovely home in Connecticut, Paris was happy with her marriage, her family, her life. So when her husband of twenty-four years said they needed to talk, Paris couldn’t imagine what he was about to say.

“I want a divorce,” Peter tells her. Just like that, the husband she adored had dumped her for a younger woman. And just like that, Peter and his thirty-one-year-old lover had made their plans for their future, leaving Paris to pick up the pieces of a shattered life. Within days, Peter was gone. And Paris was left to figure out how she intended to get through the next day, let alone the rest of her life.

The task could not have been more painful. First came the tears. Then the excruciating attempts by well-meaning friends to “fix her up” with men who paled in comparison to Peter. Worse yet, she still loved him. Finally, Paris realized she was in a fight for her very survival. Drastic measures were called for. Even her shrink agreed. It was time to move—as far away as possible, just after Peter remarried. Paris had never felt, or been, more alone.

Saying good-bye to the world she knew and loved, Paris heads west, to San Francisco, and discovers being single in a world full of men who were too young, too old, too married, or too good to be true. For Paris, the list seemed endless...the charming commitment-phobe...the drunken Neanderthal...the young Frenchman—so adorably sexy she almost forgot about his age, and did, for a while. With her dating track record veering between disappointing and disastrous, and her daughter now engaged to a man Paris’s age, Paris finally comes to the conclusion that romance is not in her future. That’s when her small circle of offbeat, loving friends becomes more important than ever before. And a decision Paris makes only for herself changes her life once more. The secret, she discovers finally, is in finding the gifts in life’s unexpected twists and turns, and turning despair into freedom and loss into joy.

In a poignant, wickedly funny novel about getting dumped and getting over it, about tackling life with both courage and laughter, Danielle Steel explores what it means to start over, whether you wanted to or not, and finding something better than you had before.

Review
The numbers say it all. This is novel number 47. Over 500 million Danielle Steel novels have been sold the world over. The market for Dating Game is described by her publisher as 'millions of loyal fans'. It seems safe to conclude, then, that the new novel by Danielle Steel does not represent a radical new departure for the author. She has not discovered chick-lit or cyberpunk. Dating Game is not an experimental novel, except in the sense that it is always an interesting experiment testing whether you can produce the same result with the same formula. Condensed version? Thrust into the world of contemporary dating by an unexpected divorce, Paris Armstrong eventually triumphs through adversity. Not to all tastes, but 'millions of loyal fans' evidently disagree.

Bravo! One of Danielle Steel's Best.
By A. Tackett
This is by far my favorite of Danielle Steel's novels. The character development is exquisite. Totally believable. She takes her time telling the story in this unabridged edition, and if you are listening to this story for the first time, this is the version I would highly recommend. I love the way the main character thinks things through, logically and thoroughly. Even as a fictitious character, she serves as an inspiration to women. I still think she should have clocked the "other woman" over the head with the punch bowl at her daughter's wedding, but she's so likable I can forgive her diplomacy. If you are a fan of Ms. Steel, you will love this book.

Three and a half stars please
By K. Morgan
Paris Armstrong is the perfect wife and mother of two grown children. She lives in a beautiful house in Greenwich, Connecticut. Her perfect world is shattered when her husband of twenty-four years, Peter, announces after a dinner party that he is leaving her for another woman. One who is barely older than their daughter. Paris is distraught to say the least and tries to pick up the pieces and move on with her life. Part of this process includes her moving to the West Coast and finding a job. There she meets Bixby Mason, party planner extraordinaire! She becomes friends with Bixby and through his encouragement decides to get back into the "dating game".
This book was an OK read. I felt sorry for Paris at first when Peter dumped her and thought he was a jerk. It was good to know that Danielle Steel could still write about people and pull the proper emotion out of me. I quickly became bored though when she moved to California and started dating. Her dates were funny but they all seemed the same. The storyline seemed to me to get stuck halfway through the book. It was like Danielle Steel got Paris to California and then didn't know what to do with her. The direction of the book appeared to be going nowhere fast.
I am getting a little tired of reading about women who are treated badly by their husbands and that is what the last few Steel novels have been. It also seems to me as if she's bringing in the same quirky characters but with different names, example: Bixby Mason. I loved this character, he definitely added entertainment to the story, but wasn't he in a previous novel but with a different name? Ms. Steel's characters all seem to be the same anymore.
I am beginning to wonder if Ms. Steel hasn't run out of ideas. After 50+ books maybe she is. I see she is due to have another book released this year. Hopefully it will be better. Although Dating Game was a somewhat enjoyable read I still prefer her earlier works. They are much more entertaining and worthy of the title "bestseller".

Filler

Years ago I was enthralled with Danielle Steel, after all, everyone dreams of a love story, even with the drama. However, I grew tired of the same descriptions of the characters, repeated storylines interwoven. I stopped reading her books. Then I saw this one, read the online reviews, and excitedly purchased it. I wish I could say I loved it. After being in the dating world forever, I certainly laughed at some of her awful dates, but it feels almost insulting to have every paragraph repeat the one before, or to repeat what the character is thinking a page later, only with different words. I wish I had loved it, I just was frustrated, and three-quarters of the way through, I jumped to the end.

The Tiger's Mouth, by Ursula Smilde-Hiatt

This is the story of a group of people - in this case, students in a class of T'ai Chi Ch'üan - who are exploring their psychological and spiritual development as they travel inwardly towards the Taoist Source of wisdom and enlightenment. The story unfolds as if they had all evolved into the 'we' of the narrator and links the symbolism in the titles of the T'ai Chi with its physical components. On the way, they encounter many of Nature's marvels, learn much about the ancient Chinese philosophy of Taoism and its allied philosophies, (both Western and otherwise), and sense within themselves the soul's search for wisdom. Of the many creatures they meet, it is the Tiger that is the most dominant and, as a symbol of the ego, its attempts to defy spiritual development enable the seeker to attain some degree of spiritual advancement. The Journey is not a treatise on the T'ai Chi itself, but, since psychological significance is given to all its movements, it is unique in the annals of T'ai Chi literature and, being allegorical, can be of interest to all.

Death Note is, easily, the best manga I've ever read, and though my list isn't exactly huge (any of the Shonen Jump manga, FLCL, Samurai Champloo) I'm still pretty confident in saying that in the future, I won't find anything to take Death Note's place as my personal favorite. Drawing on popular mythology and mixing in a bit of Japanese folklore, Death Note has more than enough to appeal to any fan of manga, while also being written so well that any average reader of comic books can pick this up and read it without difficulty.

In volume three, Light's battle with L escalates. Light, or Kira, now has no home life to speak of because of surveillance cameras hidden throughout his bedroom and his house. And if that was not difficult enough, Light finally gets the chance to meet L face to face, and he can't do anything to the mysterious genius, who willingly shares information, including his identity. But the best parts of this volume comes toward the end, when Kira begins a killing spree and shows that now he has the ability of the Shinigami Eyes, a prospect Light had originally turned down earlier in the story do to the penalty of losing half his life span. But why did he accept it now, and is it even Light who is responsible for the seemingly senseless killing taking place in front of a TV station?

In volumes one and two, it was a difficult process of trying to figure out who exactly to cheer for. Do we cheer for Light, who has some noble-reasoning behind his actions, or do we cheer for L, who wants nothing more than to stop a madman before anybody else, even criminals, dies unreasonably at Kira's hands? In this volume, it's easy to cheer for both of them, especially since Light has now joined the Task Force out to capture Kira. The cops are the good guys in this volume, and no where is this more clear than in the last chapters.

Death Note has a way of toying with your emotions as you read. You want for L to succeed, and you want for Kira to continue to allude him. Though this volume gets away from that some, it's still there, and it makes the book difficult to put down because of it. (I'm ashamed to say that I read this book from start to finish the day I got; luckily laundry day made that possible.) I've yet to find another manga that makes me do this, so I will say that if you have a favorite manga out there that you just can't get enough of, consider picking up Death Note, as it's the same way. Also, if you like the art of Hikaru No Go, Death Note was drawn by the same artist, only with a more mature style to it.

Death Note volume 3
By R. Dauthi
The third volume of Death Note gets five stars, and the fact that its continued excellence is still retained is a testament to how well the writing and story is put together, and how well the suspense that it creates will grab your attention long after you're done reading it.

Picking right up where the last volume left off, volume 3 starts with Light trying to find a way to do the duties of Kira and not look conspicuous, even with 64 microphones and cameras hidden in his room! And if this isn't enough, even L appears before Light as they meet for the first time in this volume. Will this make things easier for Light to act as Kira or just complicate things further? Just when the genius vs. genius battle of wits starts to begin, another Kira appears, adding another layer to the already thickening plot.

The artwork, as usual, is just as solid as ever. The story relies very heavily on the writing moreso than other mangas (you will find panels upon panels brimming with text), so it's a good thing that the writing itself doesn't feel like they butchered it in the translation.

Frankly, this is another great volume, living up to the standards that the series has already created for itself. If you liked Death Note 1 and 2, then there is no reason to deprive yourself of this one.

A Mesmerizing Cat and Mouse Game with Lives at Stake!
By RommelS
From activeAnime.com

In a desperate gambit to throw L off of his trail, Light has allowed himself and Misa to be interrogated and imprisoned - indefinitely. Nearly two months pass and Light employs his next move from behind bars: lose the Death Note! Without it he loses all of his memories since he first found the book. He now has no memory of being Kira, of his megalomaniac and murderous actions, or the plan he has set in motion.

Containing volumes 5 and 6 of the original manga series, the Black Edition comes in an oversized manga that has striking flat matte black cover and black edged pages. It also includes never before offered colored pages in the first five pages of this edition.

The latest moves in this gripping story are mesmerizing. L takes extreme actions to attempt to flush out Light if he is indeed Kira or Misa the second Kira. The outcome has Misa under surveillance, L completely thrown, and Light now working by L's side 24/7 to find Kira, while attached to L by handcuffs the entire time.

What are most fascinating in these latest volumes are the mental processes, doubts, insecurities and ambitions that emerge from the now amnesiac Light. He does not know he was Kira yet you can see in his thoughts as he tries to help find the murderer that the seeds that created the monster Light has become were there long before he had the Death Note. Meanwhile a new suspect has emerged. The Yotsuba group has shown some curious and grave changes of late. Misa goes undercover to help Light and in so doing learns the truth about herself and the man she's obsessed with.

Now the playing field has indelibly changed in the deadly chess game between Light and L. Light still does not know he is Kira. L suspects it but is thwarted from proving it in part due to Light's own belief and lack of memory as well as Misa, now knowledgeable, making her own moves to protect Light. It's an intriguing game of cat and mouse, particularly when the cat has forgotten his fangs. The latest volume ends in a high speed chase, sniper fire, and the cornering of the current Kira.

IN SUMMARY:
A mesmerizing cat and mouse game with the lives of innocent people the cost should L lose to Light's maniacal plotting.
