The series of books, starting with Facts and Figures and then moving to Cause & Effect and the others, are just outstanding. They should issue them in TEFL courses. They are a series of pre-made lessons you can teach with little/no prep time. They are complete, include new vocabulary, use the vocabulary in context, and have worksheets included. I use these books extensively. I wish Ms. Ackert would write 20 more, especially more at the Low Intermediate Level. They're just fantastic, and are fantastic to pull out when you need content.

gruesome read..not for the faint of heart

I've read a lot of true crime books in my life but this was the worst of the worst, by that I mean the crime itself. if you have a strong stomach you'll,be able to get through it. Robert Keller gets right to the heart of the cases he covers and has a no holds barred style. After finishing this I hope to never hear the name Albert Fish again but I will be watching for more works from Robert.

Great summary.

I have the DVDs which go into detail about the 5 keys but if you want an introduction this is a good place to start.

If you are comfortable with the price you can save the money from this book and go straight to the DVD set, well worth the money and something you will watch over and over again.

My only recommendation is that you find a third party (I bought mine on eBay) to obtain the DVDs. The Medicus website adds a lot of other products like a free 30 day trial to PGA tour partners which charges you each month if you don't cancel. I have several Medicus products but I never buy from them directly because of the deceptive sales practices.

Kindle Version is a Mess

First of all, I wasn't impressed with the content of the book: it could be more informative and a little less generic. Second, the Kindle version is a mess, unless it got fixed after I asked for a return and explained the problem. Some pages were not sized right, and virtually all (if not all) of the pictures had the wrong captions on them. It took way too much effort to try to figure out what went where; that makes no sense, particularly for a book that is so costly for a Kindle book. The book is way overpriced in my view. Somebody needs (or maybe already has/) to go back to the drawing board on this one and rethink the pricing, as well.

I'm new to the game (2.5yrs) always felt I was close to a break thru, but didn't know what i was really in search of....read this book and there it was in black and white. The 5 keys have opened my eyes to a whole new way of looking at the golf swing. I have more control over the ball as a result my game has improved by leaps and bounds!

Pretty great textbook

This was required for a 400-level history of photography class. The pictures in it are gorgeous, and the history was pretty thorough in that it seemed to cover all the major photographers of a given era (then my professor would go into greater detail about them individually). This book covers a TON of photographers, eras, movements, and so on. It does get a little dry, but it's easy to read. It's a huge and heavy book, so try not to have to cart it around everywhere you go.

Worth every penny! I actually have to read each chapter for class, and if it weren't for that I wouldn't have read every word; but I'm glad I did! Fantastic book, beautifully put together, lots of information, incredible photography and simply the best text book I have every read in my entire school life! Beautiful as week to have on the coffee table for guests to read, if you don't plan on cramming through.

The last word in the sociology of photography: a truly encyclopaedic tome. Warner proceeds from the invention of photography across genres ( war, documentary, social sciences, mass media, post-modernism, youth and beauty and so on) Her categories are broad-ranging, free and eclectic: even a cursory reading of the contents page is instructive! The format proceeds more or less chronologically through the photographers who have made their mark in photographic and art history, contextualising them within the time and the place ( this is neither a Euro nor Americo-centric work) including illustrations of their work with extended captions, a contextualisation of the genre in the history and then a brief summarising "retake" at the end of every chapter, a "focus" page on a topic or a person, all the way to the stirrings of digital technology. It's referenced, with a good bibliography: I cannot imagine a better single volume introduction to photographic criticism and appreciation. In style, it's dense, compacting a lot into a small space, but nonetheless very readable: to dip or to burrow into with equal pleasure. A desert island book.

Delivers the funky goods

I'm a teacher, and while I'm not a drummer, I understand what good teaching is. David Garabaldi has done an exemplary job as a teacher with this book and CD. He breaks down what he does into small, easy steps, and then shows the student, not only how to put it together, but how to practice the parts so that they can be learned effectively and easily. Is it quick? No. Good things never are. With music (as in so many things worth doing) you have to be willing to put in the time if you want to get it right. David shows you how to make that time investment really pay off.

I highly recommend _The Code of Funk_ to anyone who wants to learn this style of playing. Will it take time? Yes, but if you follow what's laid out here, you'll find it's not wasted time. Not only that, but the big payoff is that when you DO have it down, you'll get to play 8 tunes with Tower of Power! How cool is that?

Advanced Linear funk

This book is definetely not for the faint hearted!! Inside is pages of solid manuscript, and the grooves will not come quickly unless you already have some linear funk experience! The transcription quality is superb, dead precise, but there's still loadsa room for improvisation! It's great to be able to look at all this linear funk in the context of the songs too.

If this is your first venture into linear/new orleans funk, I'd recommend one of David's other books, Future Sounds first, as it will ease you in a lot smoother. Otherwise this book might put you off!!!

Other than that, the cd extras are so genoerous, if you've got pro-tools or whatever program you can have quite a bit of fun with it all!!

Not for beginners

"The Code of Funk" by David Garibaldi is not for beginners. This is an advanced book with his written out performances from the most recent Tower of Power CD release. Included is a pair of CD/DVD's as well as an audio CD of "music minus drums" so you can play along with Tower (a dream for many of us). The DVD's give a range of options with which to mix and filter as well as receive extra instruction.
The book notation is nearly overwhelming, not bad, mind you, but overwhelming because of the nature of the beast. It's precise. It's what he is actually performing. The syncopation between hands and feet as well as his placement of left hand/bass drum accents are fascinating. This is a great opportunity to develop independence and "freer" thinking. It's challenging, but to improve we all need the challenge. Thanks, David, for an inspiring, and frustrating, lesson.
