Why I Value Dr. Dean's "The Miracle of Magnesium"

While I have long been interested in the mineral magnesium - because of personal health problems as well as my professional training in hospital dietetics - I have found no other book on the subject that describes in layperson language the complexity of magnesium metabolism and the many health problems related to magnesium deficiency, as well as does THE MIRACLE OF MAGNESIUM.
Laypeople need access to this information because most physicians fail to see the connection between magnesium deficiency and, for example, heart disease - America's No. 1 killer! Why? Physicians learn comparatively little about the body's essential minerals in medical college and only recently has an ACCURATE test for measuring body magnesium been made available. Most physicians depend on the serum test for magnesium, not dependable for measuring the ACTIVE form of magnesium. Dr. Dean explains that mineral testing has evolved from taking whole blood measurements to testing for cell minerals to testing for mineral ions, the active component of minerals working at the tissue level. She writes: "Every year for the past forty years" the two dedicated scientists who developed this test "have produced on average a dozen peer-reviewed journal articles on magnesium and ionic magnesium testing. Their research convinces even die-hard skeptics...of the clear need for magnesium supplementation and the absolute requirement for ACCURATE testing."
Health problems Dr. Dean lists as having been successfully treated with magnesium therapy include HEART ARRHYTHMIA, SEIZURES, HYPOGLYCEMIA, COLITIS, HEAVY METAL TOXICITY, ASTHMA, MIGRAINES and NERVE PROBLEMS. I have been diagnosed with each of them -- most before it was known they can be magnesium-deficiency symptoms.
Two years ago I was stricken with periods of rapid heartbeat - a form of HEART ARRHYTHMIA. At first I thought possibly my new anticonvulsant might be causing me to lose potassium since taking extra potassium slowed my fast pulse and when I no longer took potassium my frightening sieges of rapid pulse would periodically reoccur. So I asked my nutritionally-oriented physician if he could test for potassium "leakage". Luckily he knew that for potassium to function it needs sufficient magnesium, and he ordered a 24 hour urine test for potassium, magnesium and other minerals. The test indicated I was excreting excessive amounts of BOTH potassium and magnesium. Follow-up tests showed that while the magnesium in my white blood cells was LOW that the potassium in my red blood cells was NORMAL. Obviously not enough magnesium was reaching my cells. At that point my physician prescribed INTRAVENOUS magnesium, and the night following my first shot I slept better than I had in a long time!
Several months later, following publication of her book, I noticed that Dr. Dean had written: "....magnesium is responsible for maintaining normal potassium and sodium concentrations INSIDE HEART MUSCLE CELLS." She also said that a magnesium deficiency can result in one's having not only arrhythmia, seizures and convulsions but also muscle weakness. MUSCLE WEAKNESS! I recalled that muscle weakness is one of the four major side effects known to be caused by my new anticonvulsant -the anticonvulsant I started taking shortly before I was stricken with rapid-pulse arrhythmia! At the time, I only related muscular weakness to leg and arm muscles. But after reading what Dr. Dean wrote I wondered, "COULD LOW MAGNESIUM BE WEAKENING MY HEART MUSCLES?" It seemed to me that a heart muscle that was too weak to produce a strong beat might beat much more rapidly, trying to pump more blood.
Elsewhere in the book I read, "Magnesium expert Mildred Seelig tells us that the side effects of many drugs may be associated with magnesium deficiency because MAGNESIUM BECOMES DEPLETED WHILE THE BODY IS TRYING TO DETOXIFY DRUGS."
My physician had told me the anticonvulsant I had previously taken - marketed for many years and, therefore, better evaluated - depleted magnesium. Upon reading Dr. Seelig's statement I began to suspect that my new anticonvulsant might be causing my low magnesium level and the low magnesium, in turn, might be weakening my heart muscles and triggering periods of rapid pulse arrhythmia.
In addition to receiving magnesium IVs and taking oral supplements I have paid close attention to Dr. Dean's suggestions for maintaining a healthy magnesium level. For example, she lists which foods and which brands of bottled waters have the highest levels of magnesium, which foods can block its absorption and which foods require extra magnesium for digestion and metabolism.
Just a year ago, following a 24 hour Holter test that recorded my periods of arrhythmia, my cardiologist recommended Digoxin for treating it. Because my arrhythmia had responded to taking potassium, I asked if - before trying any prescription drugs -- he would consider my first trying nutritional supplements that have been successfully used to treat arrhythmia. Unlike three other cardiologists I had consulted, he was enthused about exploring this comparatively new field with me.
His trust in me and my faith in what Dr. Dean had written were rewarded. Following my recent treadmill test, my cardiologist wrote:: "On the standard Bruce treadmill she has an excellent aerobic capacity of 10.1 METS. She completes 53 seconds of stage 3 with a maximum heart rate 158 and no arrhythmia...Recovery is rapid to heart rate 83 within six minutes and her examination and treadmill test electrocardiographically are normal before, during and after exercise."

The Miracle of Magnesium

As a nurse I am required to have 24hrs of CE credits, to renew my license. We can choose from various subjects and titles to accomplish this. I am a Medical/Surgical nurse which basicly deals with every possible ailment out there, so my choice is endless. However, we have noticed a new interest in some of our doctors for monitering the Magnesium levels on their patients. Magnesium is a mineral that got very little attention. I wanted to know why and this book just happened to be one of the selective readings I could choose from.
All I can say is what a fabulous choice! I am willing to bet that anyone reading this book will feel they are reading about themselves. It is astounding the effect magnesium deficiency has on our bodies. As I look at my patients now- it all makes sense.
This book is simple to read and understand. You do not need a medical background. It explains how magnesium deficiencies cause or contribute to certain conditions that we all have experienced, such as: fatigue, muscle cramps, heart palpitations, headaches, sleeping problems and so much more. Then it gives you directions on how you can prevent or solve it before it gets worse. It also shows how magnesium has an important role in heart disease, strokes, Alzheimers, and more.
Dr. Carolyn Dean's book is a very inexpensive investment in your health and will save you not only your money in the long run!

The Miracle of Magnesium - The human body shop manual

What would you say about wildly-broad claims for a nutrient, magnesium, that sounds like a "cure-all" for disease? Haven't you been taught that there is no such thing as a "magic bullet"? No such thing as a "miracle"? On the other hand, what if you bought a car and found that about 1/4 of its bolts and nuts were missing. Would it run? Yes, it would likely run, but it would have problems. It would require service, frequent service, and often expensive service. Dr. Dean identifies a critical weakness in American nutrition and medicine essentially identical to those missing bolts and nuts, that being chronic magnesium deficiency. Think of magnesium as bolts and nuts that hold our bodies together and keep us well. Just like missing bolts and nuts makes a car unreliable, magnesium deficiency causes more illness than anyone can imagine. Well, you can imagine it by using the missing bolt and nut analogy. Lets start thinking health with the serious stuff first. You will see that Dr. Dean shows by review of many peer-reviewed medical journal articles that nearly all of the serious/lethal heart conditions such as arrhythmias, tachycardia, EKG & ECG abnormalities, arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, angina, heart attacks (including sudden death heart attacks), high bad cholesterol, blood clots, mitral valve prolapse, type II diabetes, inability to handle "stress" are really nothing more than SYMPTOMS of severe magnesium deficiency. Our hearts and cardiovascular system needs more bolts and nuts to keep it properly working! How much more simple can cardiology get? Supply the correct parts and the body should run like a Swiss clock. Many other "diseases" such as constipation, kidney stones, menstrual cramps, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, PMS, spontaneous abortion, miscarriage, carbohydrate intolerance, ravenous appetite, obesity, low serum calcium and potassium (not correctable with supplements), elevated serum phosphorus, vitamin D resistance, muscle cramps, muscle soreness, backaches, neck pain, headaches, TMJ, muscle tension and twitches, convulsions, headaches, cluster headaches, migraine headaches, hearing loss, ringing in ears, hyperactivity, reduced (lost) intelligence, poor attention span, poor memory, stress disorders, ADHD in children (and adults), insomnia, numbness, tingling, agoraphobia, anxiety, depression, suicidal depression, irritability, panic attacks, addictive behavior (craving for cocaine, tobacco, alcohol other illegal drugs) all - each and every one - are SYMPTOMS of inadequate dietary magnesium. The diseases that are treatable, curable and preventable with magnesium supplementation represent the bulk of "diseases" currently treated with expensive pharmaceutical drugs and hospital treatments. Magnesium deficiency is a pharmaceutical company's treasure! And our worst nightmare! If all Americans supplemented their diets with sufficient magnesium (600 mg magnesium supplemental) per day, there would result a great reduction in the need for pharmaceuticals, physician and hospital services nation-wide. Why should we pay our doctors if they can't get us well by using drugs as a substitute for magnesium? Can you imagine paying a mechanic to fix your car with non-standard parts (drugs)? It should run perfectly, and so should our bodies. The main source of magnesium in the American diet 100 years ago when there was much magnesium in our food was whole wheat, dark green leafy vegetables and nuts. Due to refining wheat, there is little magnesium remaining and people tend to avoid nuts due to their oil content. Most people do not eat enough vegetables. This is why doctors that really care about our health, like Dr. Dean, say that the diets that avoid sugar and refined grain are right for us. Avoid the pitfalls of near zero magnesium-content foods and at least you have some chance of having better health. Water used to have large amounts of magnesium dissolved in it, but modern technology purifies water of its precious nutrients as well as its harmful impurities. Consequently, we have a serious culturally-induced magnesium deficiency that adversely affects all of our lives on a daily basis, and costs this country about 15% of its gross domestic product in un-necessary health costs. What to do? Don't spend money on expensive medical treatments until you have replaced your missing parts (magnesium). Dr. Dean tells you how much to use, why to supplement magnesium, where to get magnesium and when you need magnesium supplementation.

Recently, I had a chance to fly to San Diego to work with Drew Canole from FitLife.tv. “You don’t have a traffic or conversion problem,” I said.

The Online Business Bible

Having had an online business since January 2003, I've read many, MANY books about online marketing, and have even purchased some of the big-ticket courses, such as Jeff Walker's "Product Launch Formula" and Mike Filsaime's "Butterfly Marketing". I've even had a chance to review Frank Kern's "Mass Control" and "List Control" products. Others I've learned from include Rich Schefren, Glenn Livingston, Todd Brown, Mark Joyner, Terry Dean, Yanik Silver, Jim Edwards, Willie Crawford, Jimmy D. Brown, Dan Kennedy, and the list goes on and on.

I can say, without a second's hesitation, that Russell Brunson's "DOTCOM Secrets" book trumps all of them.

This book has just the right mix of high-level strategy and low-level tactics to make it a solid playbook for anyone who wants to make their online business a profitable one, while operating with the highest degree of ethics and integrity. It has shown me where I have made many mistakes along the way, and as I implement the ideas, I'm finding that it's easier to attract the right customers who resonate with my materials, and help them see the value in owning my higher-end products.

The only downside to this book is that it doesn't address the technical side of things, and this means that a newbie will need to go elsewhere for the final implementation. The good news is that once you have implemented the information here, you won't have to rebuild everything again, because you'll have done it right the first time.

THIS IS AN UPSELL

FULL DISCLOSURE - THIS BOOK IS AN UPSELL however, the book and the theory are absolutely A1. Russ provides an amazing look into the world of building a company online and sellling products online. Throughout the book he is trying to upsell you on his programs, his coaching, etc. Good read but idk about the upsells

Just a 255 Page Sales Pitch!

The first part of the book explaining sales funnels and value ladders is great. However, then he starts explaining the AC (Attractive Character) and then later a "sales pitch" he tried on his wife to let him "go out the guys". My wife is not stupid. If i tried something like she would have seen it coming the proverbial mile away and laughed in my face. Towards the end of the book you will begin to feel like you are reading the transcript notes of "get rich quick" seminar and then you realize before even finishing the book that it is just one big sales pitch for his online marketing software at $300/month.

He is apparently not the first to make the attempt. Look at the reviews of other books "related" to this one. They are all the same. They end with a sales pitch to buy into their online software. (BTW, you can get this book for free on his website by just paying S&H). I guess he'll just take the money from poor saps like me that stumbled upon his book on Amazon. I should have known better with a quote from Tony Robbins on the back. Oh Well. Sorry Mr. Brunson, you are just an everyday scam artist. I would like to earn my money the honest way! Just my 2 cents...

Modern Day Genius

William Shakespeare is recognized as the best writer of the English language. However, I find his verbage..confusing, excessive, tedious. But then I was not educated nor live in his time. I live in current times, and a similar genius of the English language, of her genre is Kitty Williams (PLEASE tell me that Kitty is short for something like, 'Kittarina'?...I have this.. image). Kitty's genius is in the opposite direction, her economy of words is.. incredible. well, well written with words that explain but also move the plot along, very, very rapidly. I love it. Fetish writers often tend to be among the worst abusers of excessive use of unnecessary words, I could name authors but will not. too much, description...too much self therapy..too much, too much. However, as I find her prose refreshing and exhilerating (I read her book in one sitting), at times, I yearned for.. a few more words. I have gone back and re-read sections...for sure, some parts need more words, more explanation. there was one place...not much more would be good.. but a few. Still a classic, I guess I will just have to buy the study guide when it comes out, or have my book club read it so we can discuss it...or watch the movie. If you like classy femdom...this is a MUST!

An ultimate study in erotic submission, erotic "death."

Shakespeare is not "confusing, excessive, tedious" as one reviewer suggests. His sonnets, especially are models of lucidity. Does anyone who has read Shakespeare at any length agree with the reviewer? No, though Kitty is perhaps my favorite erotic writer, she is no doubt "edged out" by Shakespeare, though I agree with the reviewer that she has, especially in this book, "Absolute Control," the gift of making every word tell. No wasted words and nearly every word exactly right. Her greater gift, however, in my opinion is her pitch-perfect sense of what makes for erotic sacrifice in the interests of titillation as the reader identifies either with the sadistic Fiona (for women?) or masochistic Peter (for men?) with a growing realization of the incredible arousal to be found in abject surrender to a punitive, sensual, and beloved goddess. Through all but the last pages of the story Peter is certainly not sexless but rather suspended in a state of constant arousal and tease. It is the cruelty of the goddess that makes possible degrees of subservience and sacrifice that would be impossible in a normal relationship. There is simply so much more for Peter to sacrifice and submit to as Fiona imposes her control. Note that the goddess gives to her victim the largess, the benefit, of tenderness, of deep emotional intimacy; she clothes the steel fist of cruelty in the velvet glove of sweet attentiveness, a measure of kindness. For example there is tender solicitude after beating Peter with the cane. His emotional breakdown under the cane, his screams, his tears, his terror only potentiate the intimacy afterward as his façade of dignity is stripped from him. Peter makes rather bad "bargains" with Fiona which lead him from forced chastity (all the pleasures of sex are to be hers) to permanent chastity to cuckoldry to a deep indulgence in feminization -- he makes a very pretty submissive doll -- to chemical feminization and chemical castration so that his ultimate sacrifice is of that sexual nature which betrayed him into the black widow's web in the first place. Orgasm is called the petit mort, the "little death." Such might stand as a metaphor for Peter's experience of sexual sacrifice, sexual death. And still he serves Fiona, without pleasure other than his dependencies upon her. Is there in fact a "death instinct?" Some such instinct seems in the end to drive Peter, and drive Fiona on Peter's behalf.

I have to disagree with the low reviews, it is a great reed and very well written. You will however have to like the type of content and intensity of the book. It is on the extreme side of femdom. You will not like it if you are more into the lighter side of femdom. I will however agree that the author's books are pricy compered to other good femdom reads on amazon.

I wish this was available before my own long term travel!

This is the most comprehensive guide of its type that I have ever seen. I really wish it had been available when I was planning my own long term trip in 2009.

Jeremy has not only mined his own experience as a long term traveler (having visited 34 countries and counting) but has also tapped into many of the relationships he has fostered with other long term travelers to provide a well rounded view of deciding, planning and undertaking long term travel.

The Long Term Traveler's Guide is geared towards those who are dreaming of long term travel but just haven't been able to see their dream come true. It answers questions you maybe didn't even know to ask and provides a great framework of how to go about making that dream a reality.

This guide will not tell you how to buy a train ticket in Italy, what the best hostel is in Rio de Janeiro, or what the iconic foods of Singapore are. Instead, The Long-Term Traveler's Guide will inform you on the various styles of transportation, accommodations, and eating establishments the world has to offer and will introduce you to various resources you can use to find out those details.

Whether you're just starting to think about long term travel, or are bogged down in the details of all-that-must-be-done, this guide will help you research and plan, give you some great resources, and will save you tons of work!

This book is the most update version on long term traveling available. It covered everything I needed to take the plunge into hitting the road and some things I didn't think I needed, but do. I definitely recommend it, buy it, read it, and pack it the next time you go.

Great outline for travel!

An inspiring account of how and why to get into long-term travel. It won't be accessible to people of all economic statuses, obviously, but if you're considering taking the plunge, I think you will find it useful. I've only done a 30-day backpacking trip, nothing longer, but found myself agreeing with much of the advice. I even learned a few new things, like the issue about proof of onward travel. Definitely a good resource for my next trip!

To get the most out of this book, though, it's probably best used in conjunction with the spreadsheets and other tools found on the website, especially if you're a detail-oriented person like myself. For example, Jeremy's posts about the budget in the different places he's visited have been pretty educational, as they show how much of their budget goes towards housing, food, travel, etc. These vary from place to place, of course, so I understand not wanting to put percentages in a book. My main quibble throughout chapters, though, is probably that in trying to make the book general, I think they have made it a bit too vague. But it reads quickly, like a pocket guide, and definitely covered a lot of ground, so I'd still recommend you check it out. :)

Bloody awful. Poor grammar, false bravado, BAD advice for anyone who wants a relationship.

There is a difference between being a Domme and being an abuser. Treating someone with zero respect and declaring that "in the end, it's only fair" is all about abuse. If you hate a man this much, just break it off and move on.

Great read! Check it out!

I have to say that Im totally enjoying this book. Im not even a big sports fan and I dont think you really need to be one to enjoy this. Its just super interesting reading about all the,drugs, greed, booze, and gambling (and the cover ups by the leagues, owners, coaches and players: WOW!!) that plays a HUGE roll in pro and college sports. Im about half way done and I dont want it to end. I just love reading about these so-called "role models" hanging around with gangsters, getting wasted, getting high, and gambling themselves so deep, that they have to throw games to get out! This book helps me justify my own feelings about most sports (especially football) being fake and or rigged by players, owners or even umpires.
....and I havent even got to the Pete Rose section yet!!!!

GET THIS BOOK!!! HIGHLY ENTERTAINING AND HIGHLY RECOMENDED!

If you prefer your favorite sports to read like fairy tales - dont read this book.

If you are able to separate yourself from speaking or thinking about your favorite sport team in the collective "we" then you will love Brian Tuohy's "The Fix is in". The book has been tabbed as a "conspiracy theory" book - but I would argue that the book in fact is NOT a conspiracy theory book as those books usually just throw out wild accusations with no basis or foundation to begin to even build a question or theory on. The Fix is In - is rather a suggestion and challenge to the general public and "die hard" sports fan to consider certain truths both documented and notably alleged. If you approach the book as a research document you will find much more supporting evidence of very "shady" transactions or occurrences that have gone widely ignored or unknown. Even the lack of coverage of such transactions / transgressions is a very interesting topic covered in the book. I think Tuohy opens the door to some very provocative and potentially very damning questions... and I say its about time

Changed the way I think about sports

Let me start that I am not much into conspiracy theories. However, after reading Brian Tuohy's excellent The Fix Is In, I am not so sure. Tuohy's makes the case that professional sports are too big and make too much money to be left to chance. Sports are just are version of "Bread and Circuses" from Roman times. Ratings are hugely important because that drives revenue. The NBA is probably the biggest culprit. Ever wonder why the Lakers and Celtics (now the Heat) are always in the finals? They get better ratings because they have the "superstars". Wonder why Michael Jordan never got fouls called on him? Wonder why the Knicks won the lottery for Patrick Ewing? That's what the commissioner David Stern wanted. A very good book that will make you think.
