Christy Carlyle delivered such a fun, romantic novel that I could not help except ...

Christy Carlyle delivered such a fun, romantic novel that I could not help except to fall in love with this story as well as the characters.

I was first introduced to the author earlier this year and I do not mind declaring that I have been hooked on her novels ever since. There is something extra special about a Carlyle novel that I just cannot find in any other writer and that something is the romance itself. I know that when I select a novel from the author I am going to get a breathtaking, steamy romance and as a reader that is what I want the most from historical-romance.

Getting to the highlights of the story I adored the attraction between both Sebastian and Kitty. The duo tried their darndest not to fall in love with one another, but Sebastian I think proved to be too irresistible. I really enjoyed Sebastian as the hero. He was bold, handsome and a little spiteful in nature. As for Kitty she had a spark about her. She was the ideal match for Sebastian and because of these two individuals the romance just brightened with each page that I turned.

Loved this book!!

This was my first book of Christy Carlyle's and I must say it definitely won't be the last! I loved it! I really become absorbed in the story, and to explain how descriptive Christy was with One Tempting Proposal, I could imagine myself sitting at the table with Kitty's family as her father berates her...I could feel the tension in the air. Understandably, Kitty is apprehensive at love, though she craves it. She's never had it from her father and is unsure whether it exists for her from Anyone. A bit of a challenge for Sebastian, but they join forces in an effort to help Kitty's sister, and discover romance along the way. I really enjoyed a change from the typical plots where the gentleman is in search of a bride to beget an heir-- that's been done a zillion times. I found this story new and refreshing and Christy's style of writing is one that really speaks to me! This is one of those hard to put down books...the kind that makes you stay up late to finish and go to work the next day on only 4 hours of sleep!!

I just wanted to wrap this book around me like a blanket and snuggle in deep. What a delightfully charming story. Sebastian is the perfect man in being thoughtful to other peoples feelings while newly rich. Who could resist that? Kat is a young woman who knows what she doesn't want, trying to find her way out from under her dads rule, to discover what it is that she does want. The movement from POV of these two characters is done flawlessly. I really enjoyed the historic feel without it overwhelming you with too much of the older version of speaking. Fun classic historic romance that I really enjoyed. I was given this story for an honest review and this is mine.

Great training book for training trailing dogs!

"The" book for anyone wanting to train a trailing dog! It goes into detail about all aspects of training and reading your dog properly. I recommend it for anyone wanting to train their dog and get the best results from their dog or puppy's. I have a 13 week old bloodhound that is being trained using the "Kocher" method. After a seminar, she is finding her victims and we tried an alert...Remi using paws on proper victim. She is doing it and picked the right person out of 3 people. Now, time to train to get her intensity and focus down for her basic foundation to then build on.
Thank you Mr. Kocher for a well written and concise book!

An excellent introduction and more for cocos2d

A disclaimer: I am not a game programmer. But I am a techhie, who usually picks up on new things very quickly. My interest in iphone game programming began a few months ago. My first game was using just the UIKit but then I discovered cocos2d and saw how simple it makes things. You will find a zillion (literally) tutorials on the web on cocos2d (one big reason being its so simple to use). The author of this book mentions some of them in his credits page. But there is a problem with the web tutorials: While they are great to start you off, they don't get into much details on advanced things like memory optimization, etc.

Now onto this book: I've been tracking both this book, and another one (which is about to be released) and I bought the e-book version on day one of its release. The credentials of Steffen are just right (EA games). When I first started reading the book (first few chapters), I thought he was over simplifying stuff too much - for example, encouraging us to ignore apple's memory management guidelines, sticking to cocos2d autorelease mechanisms, and also using "tags" to find sprites instead of maintaining a pointer to them. This is what the cocos2d tutorials on the web say, and that is what he says too. So I thought he hasn't spent much time trying to analyze better mechanisms.

But then, as I read ahead, Steffen starts getting into details on how to pack memory, increase performance with various tips etc. that certainly went beyond what you can infer from reading web tutorials. It became obvious, once I was beyond the first 60-70 pages that he knows what he is talking about.

Here are the pros of the book:
a) It's really the first good book on cocos2D that you can buy. You theoretically could just read the many web tutorials, but some of them give you incorrect information (for example, using NSTimer directly with cocos2d - which will mess up CCDirector's pause/stop, for example). Steffen's book is thorough and well thought out and caveats are outlined in each chapter based on his experience

b) The book covers the particle system well enough. I am glad he spent time on it.

c) On Parallax scrolling, he also covers infinite parallax scrolling, which I think any game programmer doing parallax will eventually want

d) While this may be obvious to game programmers, I never knew about the coolness of SneakyInput - a 3rd party library that already implements console controls for the iOS. Steffen covers this well

e) While there are many tutorials on tilemaps (it took me 30 minutes to learn how to use tilemaps from a tutorial by SDKTutor on youtube), Steffen goes one step ahead and dedicates a full chapter on isometric tilemaps (3D effect in 2D space). That is wonderful

f) Steffen dedicates a full chapter on Box2D (and a bit of chipmunk) and the nice thing is he takes it to another chapter where he shows how to build a pinball game that integrates Box2D with cocos2D in a working game. This is great on two counts: 1) Box2D has many tutorials, but most of them stick to a bouncing ball. They don't spend too much time showing more details on how to integrate it with a CCSprite (besides that common loop code) and merge it well into a more complex cocos2d game. In Steffen's game, he takes it several notches ahead. Box2D or chipmunk play an important role in how to make a game look real by physics (think angry birds and the cool tower toppling calcuations) 2) He explains Box2D well to a point not to get into the math but enough to know how to use it

g) He covers GameCenter as well - though I have not yet read that chapter

Now the con:

a) There are several typos. I find this odd because his is not the only book. I found typos in many other apress books. This being a programming book, typos mean the code won't compile. Thats almost unpardonable. I wonder why apress isn't more diligent about this

Do Not Order The eBook

The content of this book is pretty good. There are a lot of good sources of picking Cocos2D on the net, but it's always nice to have a good resource from which to learn a new framework. The code examples are *mostly* complete, but I noticed in a few areas that the author didn't include some crucial code that forced me to go dig into the accompanying source code to figure out what was missing. Minor annoyance, for sure, but it'd be nice to not have to leave the book and start doing diffs to figure out what was missing.

My biggest complaints really center around the eBook edition of this publication: The author and publisher have recognized a series of poor-quality images that somehow managed to creep into the final edit of the eBook version, but have done nothing to rectify the situation. It has been three months of vain promises that it would be fixed, without any real action that would indicate follow through. For an industry that is experiencing turbulent times in a digital age, this is more evidence that people can find better service from alternative sources, than the legitimate ones. While I realize that the author is not responsible for this kerfuffle, I cannot recommend buying this book, if for no other reason than the publisher is not responsive to fixing an issue that they clearly should own.

Badly needed book for cocos2d

I was looking for documentation. This is the very first book on cocos2d and was badly needed. I have gone through many of the short tutorials on the web and was able to make prototypes from it. After reading half of this book i realized there were still many things not in the web sites. After reading the first 8 chapters a programmer should be able to develop a working game. It has lots of useful tips, programming good practices in it. I will definitely recommend to any iPhone game developer.

Chris Maraffi has been teaching 3D computer graphics for over ten years, most recently as the course director of the scripting and character rigging classes at Full Sail University in Orlando. Good info and well-written, but might be overcomplex for many people

The author is good at explaining things and he covers a lot of stuff that most books on animation and even rigging really don't go into. For example, lots of books touch on joint orientation but they don't EXACTLY spell it out and most animators online seem sketchy on the concept. You can sort of partially ignore it but when you do certain things in script then it can come back to bite you if you are just letting maya do what it wants. There's a few other things like this that make it worth the price (which is pretty cheap compared to other maya books) for anyone who doesn't already know rigging in and out completely. Actually, I'd say that learning actual rigging is where the book does the best job.

What I did not like as much was that the rig is just very geared to a very heavyweight (very) high poly model. As such, the scripts are a lot more complicated than they maybe need to be for most people. If you are starting your own studio or something then they are perfect but if you are making games or animation that's not intended for a feature film it's really overkill. Actually maybe overkill even for a feature film if the character is a simple biped/human.

The scripts are still valuable, though, and overall the examples of maya are what make them useful. But, I was sort of disappointed because I hoped more for something where I click just a button after selecting a few options and get a rig for a biped that only needs to be bound to animate. But like I said, it's more complex than that.

For example there are scripts for making your bind weights off of a lower res version of the object. A great idea, but again really only if you are rigging the heck out of feature film level characters (and if that's the case you probably can't get away with a generalized rig setup anyway). It's a fair amount of work to make a lower res version of a character, and if you are just making a biped character you can just copy the weights from another character in the first place instead of first binding a lower res one from scratch and then copying the weights and then adjusting it minutely here and there.

Also, the skeleton is pretty heavyweight and so most people will have to pare this down a lot to really make use of the scripts. I guess there's no 'one size fits all' version of rigging scripts, but I was disappointed that (as far as I can tell) you can't just get your controls rigged off of them and then bind and animate. Instead they are good reference, but if you are new to rigging you are going to have to realize that this is sort of 'advanced' rig. The author points this out, but I think it should be emphasized. So, I guess the scripts are good teaching tools but I don't think most people are going to actually USE them directly because it's more of a multistep process that is a bit overkill for possibly anything short of making a feature film - which if I was making one I'd be more concerned about learning more nonstandard animation stuff.

So in short the book is good, even great for what it is (with some of the most clear and simple explanations of rigging and mel scripting out there) but I wish that the more advanced stuff had been more separated out with some option of some simple one click (or close to it) scripting of a basic skeleton without so much emphasis on the actual binding part and deformers. I guess basically an autorigger. For the amount it does, it seems almost odd it doesn't go to this extra step. there's even scripts for making skeleton itself, but the problem in general is that it's a process that takes many steps so if you are making a simpler character I think it would actually be more work than just adding it all in by hand. I'd normally not make skeleton with a script but if I did I'd want something like having it stop for each joint to have you place it (or a locator) in the correct location manually, and in general to make the scripts take more burden off of the rigger. Instead of making things simpler they seem more geared to making the most advanced rig possible, but again, I think it's almost TOO advanced, or at least for most people it will be.

But, unless you are an authority on both mel scripting and rigging you should probably pick this up. Just keep in mind if you are still more or less a beginner that for most projects this rig is going to be overkill and just pick out the parts you want and make them into a leaner process of rigging.

My new hero...

A short and sweet review from me.. .. excellent book. Easy to follow. Not only gave me a good understanding of rigging with MEL but clarified a lot of my understanding of how MAYA really works.

Good examples.. Needs several reads to let it all sink in.. but well worth the money and written by someone who obviously knows their stuff inside out, in a way you can understand.

There are a couple of small minor typos in some code.. but nothing that will stop the code running... eg. the example of page 298 has the X & Y back-to-front. The support website also is pretty lame.. and a bit disappointing. Having said all that, it's currently my MEL bible and constantly on hand for reference. Good job Chris

Vibrant, vivid illustration and a wonderful tale

The Anansi stories have been handed down through generations of Ashanti culture. This book is a wonderful, vibrant and vivid story for children of all ages. Born in Ghana I left at aged 3, leaving much of the Ghanaian culture behind. At aged 30 I can still remember a song about Anansi the spider, the only remnants left of my native tongue. I was given the Anansi book as a child, it captivated me, I read it over and over again, and it provided a connection to my past. At 16, I spent hours crafting a cushion embroidered an illustration from the book that was a childhood favorite. Sadly, the book was lost and I never thought I could get it again. Now, some 14 years since I last saw the book I can still visualize the pictures and hear the wonderful tale of Anansi the spider, his sons and the moon. I have just bought two copies, one for my niece and one for my two year old daughter. I absolutely cannot wait to read them again and again and pass this memorable story to a new generation.

Anansi Makes Me Laugh...

I am a big fan of the Anansi tales, and the spider's adventures are delightful as well as thought-provoking. For edutainment (educational entertainment) and discussion, I include them in my high school / college level introduction to mythology / humanities survey courses. All ages can enjoy a clever trickster hero who possesses many human qualities, the good and bad--who makes us think about our own deeds and behavior.

In Anansi The Spider: A Tale from the Ashanti, Gerald McDermott retells an Anansi story with warmth, cultural sensitivity, and bright, attention-seizing illustrations. Among the children's books about Anansi, McDermott's efforts stand in a unique place because the text is used sparingly and with great effect, conveying important events only and not burying key ideas in lavish descriptions or dialogues. In this book, the elaborate, geometric illustrations paint the "descriptions" that the text omits.

Features that I like...

The map in the opening that shows the continent of Africa and the country of Ghana. (I'm always happy to see a bit of geography dropped into stories, especially those designed for children.)

The Prologue, which describes the importance of folklore, mythology, and legends. I especially appreciate this statement: "Folklore prepares man for adult life. It places him within his culture."

Rather than beginning the story with the familiar "Once upon a time...," the author uses "Time was..." which is cool! :)

Each of the spider sons in the story is unique in design, appearance, and talent, which makes him easy (and fun) to identify as the tale unfolds. The six sons are See Trouble, Road Builder, River Drinker, Game Skinner, Stone Thrower, and Cushions.

The character of Anansi is rendered with an expressive personality and face while his sons' faces are not shown--just their designs, bodies, and talents. Anansi's face changes emotions based on his experiences, and this would be an excellent teaching element for very young children upon hearing / seeing the story.

A culturally rich story that captures the eye with it's art.

This story captured the attention of 18 pre-schools within a few seconds! Personally, I enjoyed this story, the unique characters and the "trickster" Anansi. The children loved acting out a skit about the 6 sons of Anansi by taping a "spider logo" to their shirt and acting out "cushion", see trouble" and the other brothers. I especially enjoy how McDermott exposes children to the beliefs of other cultures.
