Les Fleurs du mal, once the most infamous book of poems in French literature, became in the twentieth century the most famous, and the most admired: its challenge to convention when it was first published in 1857 led to its judicial condemnation, but it owes its 'landmark' status to the sheer aesthetic quality of its verses. In this volume, Professor Leakey provides a newly comprehensive guide to the understanding and appreciation of Les Fleurs du mal, offering fresh insights into its composition, themes and style (sound as well as sense), and setting it in its historical context. A whole chapter is devoted to Baudelaire's crowning poetic achievement, Le Cygne, and the book includes a detailed index to individual poems as well as a guide to further reading.

Review
"...F.W. Leakey's concise volume serves as an excellent guide to Baudelaire's poetry and life. Leakey's lifelong study of Baudelaire's works is apparent on every page, an artful blend of essential information and critical insight. ... What distinguishes this volume overall is the ease with which Leakey ties Baudelaire's work to the broad tradition of French lyric verse, and simultaneously sets it apart, highlighting Baudelaire's originality and modernity." From the Inside Flap
Modern poetry begins with Charles Baudelaire (1821-67), who employed his unequalled technical mastery to create the shadowy, desperately dramatic urban landscape -- populated by the addicted and the damned -- which so compellingly mirrors our modern condition. Deeply though darkly spiritual, titanic in the changes he wrought, Baudelaire looms over all the work, great and small, created in his wake.

Symbolism is one of those schools of poetry that seems to fallen out of favor. Baudelaire's own particular brand is harsh, revolutionary, and sensual. This is not frilly love poetry but the work of a great decadent of mid-nineteenth century France. While much is lost in translation, his poetry still rings quite powerfully and is as relevant today as it ever will be. This is one of the books that helped found later surrealist movements along with the work of Rimbaud and Marquis De Sade. A great beautiful book dealing with the great temptations and filth of existence, in essence that which brings on evil.

Leakey was for many years the doyen of English speaking critics of Baudelaire (his Collected Essays and book on Baudelaire and Nature are essential reading for scholars). This is not an introduction for readers just coming to Baudelaire. Rather, it is in some ways an abridged version of some of his other work, and the reader should have already had a reading of Les Fleurs du Mal under her or his belt. The first section is not where I would start, as it gives an exhaustive review of how the published text was put together in its various versions, which is important for a structural recognition of how different poems lead into and away from each other, but for the reader who is captivated by the power of individual poems (most people, let's face it), this editorial work isn't immediately enticing. The chapter on Baudelaire's craft is exemplary; but the prize of the book is a close reading of Le Cygne which is a classic (and adapted from his famous essay on the same topic).

Angeles y Bestias
By Jose Garcia
